What's the difference between clad and all-wood windows?
Clad windows have real wood on the interior and an aluminum or fiberglass exterior skin bonded to it. All-wood units are wood on both sides. Clad gives you the wood interior with almost no exterior upkeep, which is what most people actually want. All-wood exteriors are mostly used in historic restoration where the look of the outside has to be original.
Do wood windows rot?
Interior wood in a normally ventilated room doesn't. What rots is exterior wood that's exposed to weather and stops getting painted, which is the older product people remember. With a clad exterior there's no wood facing the weather at all. Where we'd still be careful is a bathroom or a room with heavy condensation and no ventilation, since standing moisture on any interior wood is a problem over time.
How much more do wood windows cost than vinyl?
Meaningfully more, and the gap widens with size and with the interior finish you choose. Factory-finished interiors cost more than primed or unfinished ones. That's exactly why we suggest putting wood in the rooms you live in and good vinyl in the rest, which usually lands people close to the budget they had in mind.
Can I stain them to match my existing trim?
Yes, and this is the reason most people are on this page. Interiors come unfinished or primed depending on the line, so they can be stained or painted to match your cabinetry, trim, and beams. Bring us a piece of your existing trim and we'll match a sample to it before anything is ordered so you're not guessing.
Are wood windows better insulators than vinyl?
Wood itself insulates a little better than vinyl frame material, though the difference is smaller than most people assume. The glass package matters far more than the frame, which is why we write the NFRC numbers on the quote regardless of material. Buy wood for the look and the feel of it, not for the energy bill.
Where should I not put wood windows?
Bathrooms and laundry rooms without good ventilation. Rentals and second homes that sit empty for long stretches, where nobody's watching for condensation. And rooms where you'd never notice the difference anyway, which is most guest bedrooms. We'd rather tell you that than sell you twelve of them.
Can you match the windows in an older home?
Usually. What matters is the sightlines, the proportions of the sash, and the grille pattern, since those are what your eye reads as period-correct. We measure the originals and order to match. If your home sits in a historic district with specific requirements, we'll sort that out before ordering rather than after.
Are wood windows actually worth the money?
Honestly, that depends entirely on whether you'll notice. If your interior is stained trim, timber, and stone, wood finishes the room and vinyl never quite will. If your trim is painted white and always has been, the difference is much smaller and the money might do more elsewhere. Have us bring both samples and stand them in the room before you decide.
