Most of what we do to the outside of a house is reversible. Don't like the siding color? Repaint it. Hate the shutters? Take them off. Brick is different, and that's what makes people nervous, and honestly they're right to be. Once a film of paint goes onto brick, getting it back off is a genuinely brutal job. Chemical stripping and blasting are expensive, messy, and both risk damaging the face of the brick itself, which is the part that was protecting everything behind it. So "we can always change it later" is the one thing you cannot count on here.
There's a second thing almost nobody explains, and it's the actual engineering reason to be careful. Brick is not a solid barrier, it's a material that absorbs moisture and then releases it back out. That cycle is how a brick wall works. Coat the face with a film that seals it and the moisture that gets in from behind or from the mortar joints has a harder time getting out, and in a Missouri winter, water trapped just under the surface freezes, expands, and can pop the face off the brick. That's called spalling and once it starts you can't paint your way out of it. This is why Branson brick staining and brick painting sound like the same service and really aren't.

I'm Tyler Arnold. Brick stain is a mineral-based product that soaks into the masonry and colors it from within rather than sitting on top of it. The brick keeps its texture, the mortar lines still read, it still breathes and dries the way it's supposed to, and it ages by softening rather than by peeling. That's why it's what I recommend to most folks. Paint is a film. It fully changes the look to a smooth painted surface, which some people genuinely love, and it's a legitimate choice as long as you know it's a one-way door and you're signing up for a repaint cycle from here on out.
Here's the part that makes this easy on you. Stain is testable. Every brick is different, and the same product looks like a completely different color on a red brick than on a brown or a variegated one. So we mix and apply a sample patch on a back wall or a low corner where nobody looks, let you live with it for a few days, and see it in morning light and evening light before a single square foot of the front of your house gets touched. Nobody should be picking a permanent-ish color off a photo on a screen. And if you look at that patch and hate it, we shake hands and you've lost nothing.

A masonry coating applied over the face of the brick, giving you a uniform painted surface and the widest possible range of colors. It's the right call when brick is heavily patched, mismatched from an addition, or already painted by somebody before you. What you should know going in is that it's close to permanent, it needs repainting down the road like any painted surface, and it needs a breathable masonry product rather than ordinary house paint.

Brick Questions People Ask Us
What's the difference between brick staining and brick painting?
Stain soaks into the masonry and colors it from within, so the brick keeps its texture and variation and continues to breathe. Paint is a film that sits on the surface, covers the texture, and gives a uniform painted look. Stain doesn't peel because there's nothing to peel. Paint eventually will, and it needs redone. Same goal, very different products and very different commitments.
Is it permanent? Can I change my mind later?
Stain is more forgiving. You can go darker later, and because it isn't a film it won't peel while you decide. Paint is the one to think hard about, since removing it means chemical stripping or blasting, both of which are expensive and can damage the brick face. If reversibility matters to you at all, stain is your answer.
Will staining or painting damage my brick?
A quality mineral stain doesn't, because the wall still breathes. The risk comes from sealing brick with a non-breathable coating. Moisture that gets in behind the wall or through the mortar has a harder time escaping, and when it freezes just under a sealed surface it can pop the face off the brick. That's spalling. It's the reason we ask about your brick's age and condition before recommending anything.
How much does brick staining cost?
It's priced by square footage and depends on the condition of the brick, how much washing and repair the mortar needs first, and whether we're staining the brick only or the mortar as well. It generally costs less than a full exterior repaint of a comparable house, and considerably less than replacing or covering brick you don't like.
How long does it last?
Because stain becomes part of the masonry rather than a layer on it, it doesn't have a peel-and-repaint cycle the way paint does. It softens gradually over many years and can be refreshed rather than stripped. Painted brick behaves like any painted surface and will need redone on a normal repaint schedule.
Can you change the mortar color too?
Yes, and this is the lever most people don't know exists. Staining the mortar along with the brick, or staining just the mortar, changes the look of a wall dramatically. Lightening dark mortar on a red brick house can soften the whole thing without touching the brick color at all. We'll show you both versions on the test patch.
Can you do a sample before I commit?
That's how we prefer to do it. We put a test patch somewhere out of sight, usually a back wall or a low corner, and you live with it for a few days across different light. Brick varies so much house to house that a color chip tells you almost nothing. If you don't like what you see, that's the end of it and no hard feelings.
What about whitewash, limewash, or German schmear? Are those the same thing?
They're related and they're not the same. Limewash is a thinned mineral coating that gives a soft, weathered, partly translucent look and wears naturally over time. German schmear is mortar applied over the brick face for a heavier, cottage look. Both are legitimate finishes with their own maintenance and their own permanence. We'll walk through what each one commits you to before you pick.
