Here's where this goes sideways. Somebody saves a photo of a beautiful pergola with a table under it, string lights overhead, everybody laughing. Then they build one, and the first time a July storm rolls through they discover that the thing overhead is a series of boards with gaps between them, and gaps let rain through. That's not a defect. A pergola was never a roof. It's a shade structure and a piece of architecture, and it's genuinely wonderful at both. It just will not keep a plate of hamburgers dry, and nobody says that out loud before the check clears.
The flip side happens too. Folks assume they need a full solid roof, spend accordingly, and what they actually wanted was to sit out there at five in the afternoon in July without cooking. That's a shade problem, and a properly designed pergola solves it for a good deal less. What makes it work isn't the pergola itself, it's which direction the slats run and how tightly they're spaced against your particular sun exposure. Build the same pergola with the boards turned ninety degrees and you get a completely different amount of afternoon shade. Almost nobody designs for that, which is why some pergolas feel great at dinnertime and others are just a nice-looking frame over a hot patio.

I'm Tyler Arnold. That's the first question we ask, and folks are sometimes surprised it's a question at all. If the answer is rain, meaning you want to grill in a drizzle or leave cushions out or eat outside when the sky opens up, you need a solid roof and that's a real structure with real footings. If the answer is sun, meaning the patio is unusable from about two until seven in the summer, a pergola will fix that and cost less. And if the answer is both, there are louvered systems with slats that pivot closed, which land in the middle on price and do a genuinely nice job.
When it's a pergola, we design for your yard rather than a catalog photo. We look at which way your patio faces, where the sun sits in the afternoon, and then we run the slats perpendicular to that path and space them for the shade you want. On a west-facing patio that's the whole ballgame. On a solid cover, the thing that decides whether you're happy in ten years is where it meets your house, since that flashing joint is the one place these leak. And on either one, if we're building over an existing concrete patio, we're setting footings properly rather than bolting posts to the edge of a four inch slab and calling it structural. That slab was poured to hold a grill, not a roof.

A solid roof over a patio, deck, or entry, either attached to your house or freestanding. That means proper footings, sized posts and beams, a roof structure that handles our wind and snow, and shingles or metal to match what's already on your house. Where it ties to the wall, the flashing has to be done like a roof detail rather than a caulk joint, because that joint is the one place covers fail. We'll also talk through gutters on the new roof so water doesn't just relocate your problem.

Will a pergola keep me dry in the rain?
No, and anybody telling you otherwise is selling. Slats have gaps, gaps pass water. A pergola gives you filtered shade, defines the space, and looks wonderful, and in a Missouri thunderstorm you'll still be running for the door. If staying dry matters, you want a solid roof or an adjustable louvered system that closes.
Pergola, solid roof, or louvered? How do I choose?
Pergola if the problem is afternoon sun and you're fine going inside when it rains. Solid roof if you want the space usable in any weather and you don't mind the roof over it. Louvered systems have slats that pivot closed, giving you shade on demand and rain protection when you need it, at a price between the two. Answer the sun or rain question first and this decides itself.
How much does a covered patio cost?
It moves with size, span, footing work, and what goes on top. A modest pergola over an existing patio is the affordable end. A large solid roof tied into the house with matching shingles and gutters is several times that. We measure, look at what's under the patio, and hand you written options with the payment printed next to each.
Attached to the house or freestanding?
Attached usually costs less because the house carries one side, and it makes the space feel like part of the home. The tradeoff is that it creates a connection to your roof and wall that has to be flashed correctly. Freestanding avoids touching the house entirely, which some folks prefer, and it lets you put the structure where the view or the shade actually is rather than where the wall happens to be.
Can you build over my existing concrete patio?
Usually, and the footings are the question. A typical patio slab is poured a few inches thick to hold furniture and foot traffic, not to anchor posts carrying a roof in a windstorm. So we either core through and set proper footings below, or set footings just outside the slab, depending on the layout. Anybody bolting posts to the edge of a thin slab is skipping the part that matters.
Will a cover make the rooms inside darker?
A solid roof over windows does reduce the daylight coming in, and how much depends on the size and which direction it faces. There are ways to soften it, including translucent panels in part of the roof, a lighter colored ceiling underneath, and sizing the cover so it shades the patio without reaching across every window. A pergola barely affects it at all.
What about wind? These things seem like sails.
They are, which is why footings, post size, and uplift hardware matter more on a covered patio than on almost anything else we build. Out on the open lots in Lawrence and Barry County we size everything up accordingly. A pretty structure that lifts in a spring storm helps nobody, and that's a design decision rather than a material one.
Do I need a permit or HOA approval?
Often one or both, and it varies by city, county, and subdivision, with extra review common on lake properties. Attached structures more often trigger permitting than freestanding ones. We check what applies to your address, handle the paperwork, and put together the HOA packet if your neighborhood needs one.
