I'm Tyler Arnold. A pair of shutters should be about half the width of the window each, so if you imagined them closing, they'd cover the opening. That's it. That's the whole secret, and once somebody tells it to you, you'll be evaluating every house you drive past for the rest of the week. Sorry in advance. Are exterior shutters just decoration now?
On nearly every home, yes, and that's fine. They started out functional, closing over the window against weather. Today almost all of them are fixed in place for looks. Working shutters with real hinges and hardware still exist and we can install them, though they cost considerably more and most folks are after the appearance.
How do I know what size my shutters should be?
Each shutter should be roughly half the width of the window, so the pair would cover the opening if they closed. Height should match the window opening closely. If yours are noticeably narrower than half, that's why they've never looked quite right. We measure each window rather than working from stock sizes.
How much do exterior shutters cost?
This is one of the least expensive things we do. Cost depends on how many pairs, the size, and the material, with vinyl at the low end and real wood at the top. For most homes, shutters land in a range where they're the cheapest visible change you can make, which is why we bring them up when somebody wants a difference without a big project.
Vinyl, composite, or wood?
Vinyl costs the least, never rots, and comes in molded louvered or board and batten styles. Composite is stiffer, holds color better, and looks more like real wood at a middle price. Real wood looks the best and can be painted any color you want, and it needs repainting like any wood on your house. On most subdivision homes vinyl or composite is the sensible call.
Can I paint my existing shutters instead of replacing them?
Often, yes, and it's worth considering before you spend on new ones. Vinyl shutters can be painted with the right product, though very dark colors on vinyl absorb heat and can cause warping, so color choice matters. If yours are warped, cracked, or badly the wrong size, paint won't fix the actual problem.
Which windows should have shutters, and which shouldn't?
Single vertical windows are the natural home for them. Skip them on wide picture windows, on windows ganged together in twos and threes, and on anything wider than it is tall, because a pair of shutters can't visually make sense there. Consistency across the front of the house matters more than putting them on everything.
How are they attached, and will that hurt my siding?
They get fastened through the siding into solid backing with hardware made for it, spaced so water can drain behind the shutter rather than sitting against your wall. On vinyl siding the fasteners have to allow the panel to expand and contract, since driving anything tight through vinyl is how a panel cracks in a cold snap. Done right, it doesn't hurt anything.
Do shutters actually help resale?
They help how a house photographs and how it reads from the curb, which matters a great deal when a buyer is deciding whether to get out of the car. It's a small spend with a visible return. What we wouldn't tell you is that shutters alone will change an appraisal, because that isn't how it works.
