Here's the thing nobody explains about doors. A door is a rectangle of solid material hung inside an opening in a house, and the house does not hold still. Wood absorbs moisture in an Ozarks summer and gives it back in winter. Foundations move a little with wet and dry seasons. Framing settles for decades. So the gap around your door, which needs to be about the thickness of a nickel to work right, changes with the weather. That's why the back door drags in July and swings free in January, and why folks think their door has gone bad when what actually happened is the house breathed.

The other half is that door complaints all sound the same and have completely different causes. "It won't latch" usually means the strike plate and the latch have stopped lining up, often by an eighth of an inch. "I have to slam it" is generally the same thing. "There's a draft" is frequently the threshold or the sweep rather than the door. "It sags" is almost always the top hinge. People end up buying new locks that were never broken and new doors that were never the problem, because nobody worked through it in order. I'm Tyler Arnold. When we look at a door, we work a list from the least expensive thing to the most, and we stop as soon as we find it. Hinges first, since a loose top hinge causes the majority of sticking and sagging. Then strike plate alignment, which is usually a matter of moving a plate a hair or filing the opening. Then the threshold and sweep for drafts. Then the frame, checking whether it's still square. The door itself is dead last on that list, because it's almost never the door. Anybody who starts at the end of the list and quotes you a replacement door hasn't looked at the first four things.

Here's a free one while I'm at it. A lot of exterior doors have an adjustable threshold, meaning that strip you step over has four or five screws across the top of it. Turn those screws and the threshold rises or lowers against the bottom of the door. If you can feel cold air across the floor in January, back those screws out a bit and it often seals right up. Costs nothing, takes ten minutes, and I'd rather you try it than pay us to come do it. Two more honest notes. If your door only sticks in humid months, sometimes the right answer is to leave it alone rather than plane it, since a door planed in August will have a gap in January. And we're not a lockout service. If you need keys or rekeying, call a locksmith, that's their trade and they're better at it.
