There's a reason people around here keep asking about wood. Cedar against native stone, timber posts, and a treeline looks like it grew out of the place. Vinyl on a lake cabin looks like a decision made in a spreadsheet, and everybody can tell from the road even when they can't say why. So folks with cabins near Table Rock, homes tucked in the trees, or anything with a lodge feel keep circling back to wood even after somebody's told them it's more work.
Then the confusion starts, and this one is on our industry. A whole lot of what gets sold as wood siding now is engineered wood, which is wood fiber and resin pressed into boards with a wood grain stamped on the face. It's a genuinely good product. It is also not cedar, and a fair number of quotes never make that distinction clearly. So somebody thinks they're pricing real Branson wood siding against another bid for real wood, and one of them is engineered and costs considerably less. There's no wrong answer. Real cedar is beautiful and it needs that upkeep, and cedar on a homeowner who never touches it turns gray and splits and looks worse than vinyl ever did. So every board gets sealed on all six sides before it goes on the wall, and every field cut gets sealed before it's fastened. That's slow, it costs labor, and it's the first thing a fast crew skips because you will never see it. Traditional solid wood in the profiles people around here actually use. Lap and bevel siding, tongue and groove, board and batten for gables, shops, and accent walls, plus shiplap and channel rustic on cabin projects. Solid wood takes stain or paint, can be repaired board by board decades later, and rewards good installation more than any other siding material we handle.
Cedar Siding
The real thing, and the reason people fall in love with wood in the first place. Cedar is naturally resistant to rot and insects, takes stain beautifully, and ages into a look nothing else quite matches. It costs the most of the three and it asks for re-staining every few years. Wood Siding Questions People Ask Us
What's the difference between wood siding and LP SmartSide?
Real wood is milled from a tree, usually cedar around here. LP SmartSide is engineered wood, made from wood strands and resin compressed into boards with a treated core and a factory finish. Engineered wood resists rot, insects, and woodpeckers better, costs less, and needs painting far less often. Real cedar has grain and depth that engineered wood approximates but doesn't equal. Both are legitimate. They just aren't the same thing or the same price.
How much does wood siding cost compared to vinyl?
Meaningfully more, and cedar is the top of that range. Engineered wood sits between vinyl and cedar. Beyond material, wood costs more to install because it takes longer to do right, and there's finishing labor on top if it's being stained or painted on site. We'll price the options side by side so you can see the gaps rather than guess at them.
How often does cedar need re-stained?
Figure every three to five years around here, and sooner on the south and west walls that take the most sun. Semi-transparent stains need it more often than solid ones. If that schedule sounds like something you'll skip, that's genuinely useful to know now, and it points toward engineered wood instead.
Will wood siding rot in our humidity?
It can, and how it's installed matters more than the weather does. Rot starts at the cut ends and on the back side where nobody looks, so sealing all six sides of every board and every field cut is what prevents it. Keeping the bottom course up off grade, flashing correctly above windows and doors, and a gutter system that works handle most of the rest.
What about carpenter bees and woodpeckers?
Both are real around here. Carpenter bees drill perfectly round holes in soft, unfinished wood, and woodpeckers often follow because they're after the larvae. Finished and sealed wood is much less attractive to bees than bare wood, which is another reason we don't leave anything unfinished. Engineered wood is the more bee-resistant option if you've already fought this battle once.
Should I choose cedar or engineered wood for my house?
Cedar if the look matters most, the house is sheltered or lodge-style, and you'll keep up the staining. Engineered wood if you want the wood look on a maintenance schedule closer to vinyl, or if the wall takes hard sun and wind. Plenty of homes get both, with cedar in the protected, visible spots and engineered wood on the elevations that take a beating.
Should wood siding be stained or painted?
Stain lets the grain show and wears by fading rather than peeling, which makes recoating simpler. Paint lasts longer between coats, hides more, and gives you any color you want, but when it fails it peels and needs scraping. On cedar most folks stain. On engineered wood, it usually comes with a factory finish and gets painted down the road.
Can you match the wood siding on my older home?
Usually. Older houses have specific profiles and reveals, and getting those wrong is what makes a repair look like a repair. We'll measure the existing boards, source or mill to match where we can, and tell you honestly if a perfect match isn't available before we start rather than after.
