I'm Tyler Arnold. Do that before you call anybody, because that one number decides whether this project makes sense. Any ceiling system eats some headroom, so if you've got eight feet or more from grade to the underside of your joists, you'll end up with a space that feels like a room. Come in much under that and you're building a very nice crawlspace, and I'd rather tell you that on the phone than take your money. This is one of those services where a lot of houses are simply not candidates, and we'd rather be the ones who said so.
If you clear the height, the real decision is over joist or under joist. Under joist means panels or troughs hung below your existing framing, which is the retrofit and works on a deck you already have. Over joist means a membrane and trough system laid across the top of the joists before the decking goes down, so water never gets into the framing at all. That second one is the better long-term answer, because it also keeps the top edge of your joists dry, and that top edge is exactly where decks rot from. Here's the part worth knowing: over joist is only possible when the boards are off. So if you're re-decking anyway, do it then. Doing it later means paying to pull the deck back up.

What exactly is an under deck ceiling?
It's a drainage system that catches the water coming through your deck boards and carries it out to the edge, with a finished ceiling underneath so the space below stays dry and looks like a room instead of a bunch of framing. Add lighting and a fan and it becomes a covered patio you can use in the rain, on the square footage you already own.
Over joist or under joist? What's the difference?
Under joist systems hang below your existing framing, which makes them the retrofit option for a deck that's already built. Over joist systems go on top of the joists before the decking is installed, so water never reaches the framing at all. Over joist protects your joists as well as your head, and it can only be done when the deck boards are off.
How much headroom do I need?
Measure from the ground to the underside of your joists. Eight feet or more and you'll have a comfortable room after the system takes its share. Somewhere around seven and it starts feeling tight. Much below that and we'd tell you to skip it, because you'd be spending real money on a space you still won't want to sit in.
Will it be completely dry down there?
Dry from what falls through the deck, yes, when the system is installed with proper slope and the water has somewhere to go. What it doesn't stop is rain blowing in sideways from the open sides, which is what everybody forgets. If wind-driven rain is a concern on your lot, we can talk about partial screening or panels on the weather side.
How much does it cost?
It's priced by square footage and depends on which system, how tall the deck is, and how much drainage and gutter work the edge needs. Under joist retrofits on a straightforward deck are the affordable end. Over joist during a re-deck is very reasonable as an add since the boards are already up. We measure and put it in writing either way.
Can you install one on the deck I already have?
Usually yes, provided the framing is sound and you have the headroom. We check the joists first, because hanging a ceiling under rotted framing is putting a nice lid on a problem. If the deck needs repair work, that comes first and we'll price both so you can see the whole picture.
Where does all that water actually go?
Out to the low edge of the system and into a gutter and downspout, then away from the house like any other roof water. This is the part that separates a system that works from one that drips in a corner. If your lot slopes back toward the foundation, we'll extend the discharge or bury a line rather than dumping it right there.
Can I add lights, a fan, or a TV under there?
Yes, and it's what makes the space feel finished. Wiring gets done by a licensed electrician we work with rather than by our carpenters, since that's their trade. Plan the electrical before the ceiling goes up, because running it afterward means pulling panels back down and nobody enjoys that conversation.
