How much do copper gutters cost compared to aluminum?
Several times more, and the gap widens once you add soldered seams and copper hangers and downspouts. Copper is a commodity, so pricing moves with the metals market, which means a quote from last spring isn't a quote today. We price it fresh, put the number in writing, and show the monthly payment beside it.
How long do copper gutters last?
A long time. Properly installed and soldered copper commonly outlasts the roof over it and sometimes the people who bought it. That's the practical argument for copper, though honestly most people buying it aren't doing the math on lifespan. They're buying how it looks, and that's a fine reason.
How does the patina work, and can I keep it shiny?
Bright when installed, dull brown within a year or so, and then slowly toward green over many years, often unevenly depending on which sides get sun and rain. You can slow it with a clear coating, but that needs reapplying and it fights what the metal wants to do. Most folks let it go and are glad they did. Just know the middle years are brown, not green.
Will copper stain my siding or stone?
It can, especially in the first year or two while the metal is weathering. Runoff off fresh copper can leave streaks on light stucco, painted siding, and stone below it. Half-round is the traditional profile and it's what most people are picturing when they think copper. It suits older homes, lodge and timber architecture, and anything with a historic feel. K-style copper matches modern rooflines and holds a bit more water for its size. We'll show you both against your actual house before you pick.
Do you solder the seams?
Yes, and it's worth asking anybody who quotes you. Soldering fuses the joints and end caps into one continuous piece of metal. The faster method is riveting and sealing with caulk, which works for a while and then fails at the joints, which rather defeats the point of buying a material that lasts a century.
Can I put copper on just part of the house?
You can, and we suggest it often. Copper across the front and any elevation people actually see, matched painted aluminum on the back and less visible sides. You get the look you wanted for a good deal less. Anybody who tells you it has to be all or nothing is selling, not advising.
Is copper theft something to worry about around here?
It's worth thinking about on unoccupied properties, which around the lake means seasonal homes and rentals that sit empty for stretches. Downspouts at ground level are the vulnerable part. There are practical ways to handle it, including secured fasteners and running the lower section in a matched material, and we'll talk through it if your place sits empty a lot.
