Metal Siding Has an Image Problem and Half of It Is Fair
Say metal siding around here and most people picture one of two things. Either a pole barn out on the highway, or a 1960s aluminum ranch with a dent in the front wall from a baseball somebody threw in 1987. Both of those exist and neither is what a modern steel panel looks like on a house. Black board and batten steel on a modern farmhouse in Nixa looks about as sharp as anything getting built right now. Meanwhile on a shop or a barn, metal is quietly the best value in the whole siding business and nobody has ever needed convincing of that.
The part that trips people up is the stuff nobody brings up until after. Metal dents, and how much depends on gauge and whether it's steel or aluminum. Flat panels can show oil canning, which is a gentle waviness in the face that catches raking afternoon light and drives some folks crazy while other people never notice it. Exposed fasteners back out over the years. And if a crew cuts panels with an abrasive grinder, the hot sparks land on the finish and turn into little orange rust freckles within a year. I'm Tyler Arnold. Oil canning is a slight waviness that shows up on the flat parts of metal panels, and it is normal, it is not a defect, and every manufacturer says so in their own literature. It's more visible on wide flat panels, on darker colors, and in low angled sun. It's less visible on panels with striations or a texture rolled into the face, on heavier gauge, and on narrower profiles. I'd rather explain that in your driveway than have you call me in October wondering what went wrong with your wall. Some people look at a lightly oil canned wall and see character. Some people cannot unsee it. Which one you are decides which panel we order.
The other thing is how we cut. We cut metal with shears, nibblers, or a proper metal-cutting blade, never an abrasive grinder wheel. Grinding throws hot metal filings that embed in the paint finish and rust out orange across a brand new wall the following spring. Cut edges get handled and sealed, and offcuts don't get dragged across finished panels. It's slow, careful work and it's the difference between a wall that looks new in eight years and one that's speckled. Will metal siding make my house look like a barn?
Only if you pick barn panels, and some people do on purpose. Modern residential profiles like board and batten steel, narrow-rib panels, and flush wall panels read very differently, especially with proper trim at corners and windows. Most homes around here use metal as an accent on gables or an entry wall rather than wrapping the whole house, and that combination tends to look best.
Will it dent in hail?
It can, and gauge and material decide how much. Steel resists denting considerably better than aluminum. Heavier gauge beats lighter gauge. Textured and striated finishes hide small dings that a smooth flat panel puts on display. The good news is that dents in metal siding are cosmetic, since the wall keeps doing its job either way.
What is oil canning?
A slight waviness in the flat areas of a metal panel, visible mostly in low angled light. It's a normal characteristic of the material, not a defect, and manufacturers say so in their own documentation. Heavier gauge, narrower panels, and a texture or striations rolled into the face all reduce how much you see it. Lighter colors show it less than dark ones.
How does the cost compare to vinyl or fiber cement?
On a house, metal usually lands above vinyl and in the neighborhood of engineered wood and fiber cement, depending on the panel. On a shop or barn, it's the cheapest way to cover a lot of square footage well, which is why it dominates out in the county. Pricing also moves with the steel market, so an old quote isn't a current quote.
Will metal siding rust?
Modern steel panels are coated and painted to prevent it, and the wall face holds up for decades. Where rust starts is at cut edges that weren't handled properly, at scratches down to bare metal, and from metal filings left on the finish by grinder cutting. All three are workmanship issues, which is why we make a point of how we cut and handle panels.
Is metal siding loud in the rain or hot in summer?
Not on a house. Wall panels go over sheathing and house wrap, which kills the noise. On an uninsulated shop it can be louder, same as a bare metal roof. Heat is less of an issue than people expect, since modern finishes reflect a fair amount of solar energy, and lighter colors do better than dark ones.
Can I do metal on just part of the house?
That's how most residential jobs go. Metal on the gables, an entry wall, or a single elevation, with LP, fiber cement, or vinyl on the rest. It gives you the look without committing the whole exterior, and the contrast is usually what makes it work in the first place.
Do you side shops, barns, and outbuildings?
We do, and it's a good chunk of our metal work. One thing worth raising on uninsulated buildings is condensation. Metal walls sweat when warm humid air hits a cold panel, and that moisture ends up on whatever you're storing. Proper vapor control and ventilation handles it, and we'll bring it up before it becomes your problem.
