U-factor tells you how well it holds heat in, and lower is better. Solar heat gain coefficient tells you how much of the sun's heat it lets through, and around here lower is usually better on west-facing glass. We write those figures right on your estimate for exactly what we're quoting. Take that paper to the other two bids and ask them for the same numbers. Window Replacement
Taking out what's there and putting in new. Insert replacement drops the new unit into your existing frame, which is faster, costs less, and works well when the frame is solid. Full-frame goes back to the rough opening so we can flash it properly, which is the right call when there's rot or the old frame is finished. We look at the frame before we recommend either one, because quoting that blind is guessing.
Window Installation
New openings, additions, and new construction. This is where we're setting units into framing rather than working around somebody else's old work, so the sill pan, flashing, and air sealing all get done in the correct order the first time. If you're adding a room or cutting in a new window where there wasn't one, this is that job.
Energy Efficient Windows

How much does window replacement cost?
It depends on how many openings, the size of each, the frame material, and the glass package. A standard bedroom window is a fraction of what a large picture window or a bay costs. Vinyl runs less than wood. We measure everything, then give you three written options with the monthly payment printed beside each total.
Why does it take weeks to get my windows?
Because they're being built for your house. Once we measure and place the order, the manufacturer makes each unit to those exact dimensions with the glass package you picked. Lead times move with the season and with what's on order elsewhere. The install itself is usually a day or two. The wait is the factory, and anybody promising you windows next week is either stocking standard sizes or telling you a story.
How do I compare two window bids fairly?
Ask both for the NFRC numbers on the specific glass package they're quoting, in writing. That label is the industry's own scorecard and it lets you compare a brand you know against one you don't. Then check whether both bids are insert or full-frame, since those are different amounts of work, and confirm what interior finish work is included.
What do U-factor and SHGC actually mean?
U-factor measures how much heat passes through the whole window, so lower is better for keeping your house warm in January. SHGC, or solar heat gain coefficient, measures how much of the sun's heat comes through, and lower generally suits our summers, especially on south and west glass. On a shaded north window a slightly higher number can be fine.
Do I have to replace all my windows at once?
No, and sometimes you shouldn't. Doing the worst wall or the worst few openings first is a completely legitimate plan, and it's what we'd suggest if the whole-house number is a stretch. The windows that cost you the most comfort are usually the west-facing ones and any that are drafty or painted shut. Start there, live with it, do the rest later.
What happens to my interior trim and paint?
This is the question people forget to ask. Insert replacement usually leaves your existing interior trim in place, so touch-up is minimal. Full-frame means the trim comes off and new interior casing goes back, which needs painted or stained afterward. We tell you which one your job is and whether that finish work is in our price or yours, before you sign anything.
When's the best time of year to replace windows?
Fall and late winter tend to be the calmest for scheduling, and mild weather makes for easier installs since openings are open for part of the day. Spring is the busiest, so lead times stretch. We work year round and we won't open a wall in a downpour or a hard freeze, so the schedule stays flexible around weather.
How long does the actual install take?
Most homes are one to three days once the windows arrive. We work one room at a time, and every opening we take out gets closed the same day. You don't have to be home for all of it, though plenty of folks like to be there the first morning to meet the crew and see how it goes.
