A Class 4 shingle is a shingle that has passed the highest impact-resistance test in the roofing industry, which makes it one of the strongest choices for protecting an Ozarks home from hail. It is built to hold up to hail, not to be hail-proof.
What does Class 4 actually mean?
Class 4 comes from an impact test (UL 2218) that drops a two-inch steel ball from 20 feet onto the roofing. A shingle earns Class 4 only if it does not crack through under that impact. Class 3 and below use smaller balls and lower drops, so Class 4 is the top of the scale.
Why does hail matter on an Ozarks roof?
Spring thunderheads roll over the Ozarks every year, and hail is part of that pattern. A roof that resists impact is a roof that stays sealed, which protects the decking, the insulation and the rooms underneath. That is the point of choosing it: protection first, repairs later or never.
Which shingles do you install for impact resistance?
On a Thunderhead shingle roof, we install TAMKO StormFighter FLEX 4, with Class 4 impact, registered under TAMKO MasterShield, and TAMKO Titan XT, with Class 3 impact and a 160-mph wind warranty. Either is installed as a complete system over a full tear-off and deck inspection. See the full Thunderhead roof system for what is always included.
Does Class 4 mean the roof is hail-proof?
No, and we will not tell you it is. Class 4 means the shingle is designed to hold up to Ozarks hail, and no roof is proof against every storm. A Class 4 roof is built to give you more protection and fewer reasons to file a claim.
Can a Class 4 roof lower my insurance?
Impact-rated roofs may qualify for an insurance discount with some carriers. Discounts vary by carrier, and some carriers set their own terms, so we put expectations in writing and send your carrier the certificate.
